So how do you do less when you have more to do? Here are 6 tips on how to work smarter not harder!
- Outsource
As much as we’d like to, we just can’t do everything, and that means that sometimes you need to seek help from others. Outsourcing tasks and using the talents of others is a great way to use your time effectively. This leaves you with more time to focus on your business. - Do less with more focus
A never-ending to-do list can seem a bit daunting, so prioritise your list and pick the top task which has the highest priority and focus on getting that done and nothing else. Put your phone on silent, close down your emails so you don’t get interrupted by notifications and focus on that task alone until it’s done. You can then relish in the feeling of ticking that one off your list! - Organisation and planning
It helps to organise what needs doing and plan how to do it. Choose a time of day – either first thing in the morning or at the end of the day, whichever works best for you, to go through, assess and plan what needs doing and how you’ll do it. - Work to your strengths
It’s far more effective to work on things that you’re good at than to spend time working on things you don’t do well or don’t enjoy as much – see point No1! What are your strengths? Divide your To Do List into 3: a) tasks only you can perform, b) what you do well and enjoy and c) everything else. Start with the ‘a’ list first and then work on ‘b’ list. Everything else can be outsourced, saving you time and energy for ‘a’ and ‘b’ tasks. - Don’t reinvent the wheel
If a technique or system works, don’t try to change it. Don’t waste your energy on things that may not work. Use your creativity for what is needed and don’t waste time spinning your wheels. There’s a time for invention and experimentation and a time for doing what works, and sometimes it is making the right choice between them that determines our productivity. - Be your best to do your best
In order to be able to do our best, we need to look after ourselves. This means taking regular breaks, getting some fresh air and making sure we get enough sleep! We need to invest just as much in our health and wellbeing as we do in our business.
